What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?

A Himalayan salt lamp is a chunk of rock salt that has been hollowed out with a light fitting placed inside.

The salt gives the light a warm pink or orange colour once turned on.

That uneven, natural look is part of the appeal. You are not getting something that looks the same from one lamp to the next. But what are they? Here is what you should know about our quality and genuine Himalayan salt lamp.

Quality Himalayan Rock Salt Lamp for the Home or Office

Our Himalayan rock salt lamps are comprised of large pieces of Himalayan salt. They come in a variety of sizes and interesting shapes.

We hollow the bottom and insert a light, transforming the salt block into the perfect desktop or nightstand lamp. The light shines through the salt, which softens the lighting and produces a pleasant glow.

The lamp plugs into an outlet as with any other lamp. We also carry salt lamps with USB plugs for powering the lamp from your laptop or desktop computer.

Different Colours and Natural Variation

Pink and orange are the colours connected with Himalayan salt lamps.

We also stock white and grey styles.

Natural lines, darker patches, lighter sections and uneven areas can all be part of the salt itself. These are not necessarily faults. They are one of the reasons individual lamps can look quite different from the photographs.

Himalayan Salt Lamps for the Home

There is quite a bit of choice in this collection.

Alongside the traditional rough-shaped salt lamps, we have lamps made into spheres, hearts, pyramids, bowls and other shapes. There are also basket lamps, USB lamps, night lights and larger floor-standing pieces.

Wide Selection of Himalayan Salt Lamps with Eye-Catching Designs

We have lamps to suit any setting, including stunning lamps with original designs. Our collections include:

Himalayan lamps
Lamp baskets
Wall plug lamps
USB lamps
Salt Candle holders

For a striking appearance, browse our framed lamp baskets. These designs feature detailed craftwork that helps highlight the warm glow of the Himalayan salt.

We also carry wall plug lamps. The compact lamps simply plug into any electrical outlet and are a useful option if you want a smaller salt lamp without taking up table space.

Choosing a Salt Lamp as a Gift

A salt lamp can also make an unusual decorative gift.

If you are buying one for somebody else, smaller lamps are usually easier to handle and find a place for. Shaped lamps are another option if you already know the type of design they like.

Whatever style you choose, remember that natural salt varies. The lamp received may have slightly different colouring, markings and edges from the one shown in the photographs.

Choosing the Right Size

Check both the measurements and weight before buying a Himalayan salt lamp.

A 1–2kg lamp is very different in size from a 10kg or 20kg piece, even though they may look similar when viewed individually in product photographs.

Smaller lamps are easier to move around and generally need less surface space.

Larger lamps can make more of a visual feature in a room but need a suitably strong table, cabinet or floor position.

There are also compact USB lamps if you want something that takes up very little room.

Plug-In and USB Salt Lamps

Most standard salt lamps use a mains cable and plug.

We also have USB-powered designs. These can be useful on a desk or somewhere close to a suitable USB power source.

The connection and bulb can vary between products. You should check the individual listing rather than assuming every lamp uses the same setup.

If a bulb is included, this will normally be mentioned in the product description.

Salt Lamp Baskets and Bowls

Not every lamp in the collection is carved from one solid piece.

Salt lamp baskets usually have a metal outer frame filled with smaller pieces of salt. The bulb sits inside the basket and shines through the gaps between the pieces.

Fire bowls and similar designs arrange smaller salt pieces around a central light.

These give a noticeably different appearance from a traditional solid salt lamp and are worth considering if you want something a little less conventional.

What Happens If the Salt Chips?

Small chips can happen, particularly around the rougher edges of a natural-shaped lamp. Salt is not an especially hard material.

Take a little care when moving the lamp and don't knock it against the edge of a table or another hard object.

A small change around a rough edge doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with the lamp.

Will My Salt Lamp Look Exactly Like the One in the Picture?

Probably not, and with a natural salt lamp, that is quite normal.

The shape, lines and colouring will vary. One lamp might be mostly pale pink while another from the same range has darker orange areas running through it. Rough lamps can also have different edges and outlines.

Product photographs are therefore best used to show the general style rather than the exact piece you will receive.

What Type of Bulb Does a Salt Lamp Use?

This depends on the lamp.

Traditional mains-powered salt lamps normally have a small bulb fitted inside the salt. Other designs may use a different type of light, particularly USB lamps and smaller models.

Check the individual product page before buying a replacement bulb. The fitting and wattage aren't necessarily the same across every lamp in the collection.

What Is the Base Made From?

Many traditional Himalayan salt lamps sit on a wooden base. The base gives the uneven piece of salt a flat surface to stand on and also provides space underneath for the light fitting.

Other designs are made differently. Basket lamps use a metal frame, for example, while some shaped and smaller lamps have their own type of base or fitting.

You can see the particular design in the photographs on each product page.
