Himalayan Salt Block

This Himalayan salt block is cut from natural pink rock salt from Pakistan.

It can be used for cooking or simply as a serving block. The solid slab holds heat well which makes it useful for foods such as meat, fish, vegetables and eggs.

You can also chill the block first if you want to use it for serving cold food.

Because it is natural salt no two blocks will look the same. The shade can range from pale pink through to much deeper red or orange. You may also see lines or small cracks through the surface.

Cooking on a Salt Block

The block needs to be heated slowly.

Do not put a cold salt block straight onto very high heat. Give it time to warm up in stages instead.

Once it is hot you can cook food directly on the surface.

Food with more moisture can pick up the salty flavour quite quickly. A light coating of oil can help if you do not want too much salt transferring to the food.

Smaller pieces of food are usually easier to cook on the block.

How Salty Will the Food Taste?

This depends on what you are cooking.

Food with more moisture can pick up the salt quite quickly. Drier food will usually take on less.

How long it stays on the block matters too.

If it is your first time using one then keep an eye on the food and do not leave it sitting there longer than needed.

The block may change a little once it has been heated.

The colour can become lighter in places and some of the natural lines may become more noticeable.
